Many reasons can be attributed to pregnant women having heartburn. One reason is because of the constant change of hormone levels in pregnant women which in effect softens one’s ligaments that keep in check the “Lower Esophageal Sphincter” or LES closed. And if this esophageal sphincter opens at the wrong time, acids in the stomach as well as its other contents go back all the way to the throat from the esophagus and stomach. Another reason is that as the baby grows inside, more force is pushed to the stomach thus the acid reflux.
Heartburn is not a curable condition however it is relievable and preventable. The following are some precautionary steps and remedies for pregnant women who suffer from heartburn symptoms.

Avoid eating foods that cause heartburn symptoms like tomato based products or tomatoes, chocolates, citrus foods, mustard, vinegar, mint products, fried, seasoned and fatty foods. Control your urge to drink beverages that have caffeine content in them, examples are sodas, coffee and tea because it may only trigger acid reflux or soften the ligaments that control the LES. For evident reasons, alcoholic beverages are prohibited during pregnancy but for digestion purposes it also softens the esophageal sphincter lining that could cause heartburn. Do not stuff yourself up, eat light meals only.

Always chew food properly. Rest for at least 3 hours after eating before you go to sleep. It is normally recommended for pregnant women to drink 8-10 glasses a day for its many health reasons and likewise it is also effective in preventing stomach contents and acid from going back up the esophagus since the stomach is full of water, the LES is closed. Prop your pillow and position it at elevated level about 6 to 8 inches. Here gravity does the work for you, keeping stomach contents and acids in place.

Avoid skimpy clothes as this will only trigger heartburn symptoms instead wear comfortable and loose clothes. Avoid slouching when sitting, sit up straight. Maintain your doctor’s recommended weight and avoid getting overweight as it will only put your stomach in more pressure than needed. Use your knees when you bend and not your waist because the pressure is also placed on your stomach and waist when you bend improperly. Smoking is bad in all aspects especially during pregnancy, other than the health risks it pose, it also tends to trigger heartburn.
