Effective Treatment For Acid Reflux Disease

The last thing you want to enjoy after a great meal is acid reflux disease, also known as GERD. Some people will get acid reflux for seemingly no reason at all, or even after the lightest of meals, where other people seem to get it based on how their body reacts to certain foods.

If you can determine that only certain foods cause acid reflux, the most obvious advice is to stay away from those foods! But sometimes this is hard to avoid.

Like if you are having dinner with friends or at a business dinner and everyone else is having filet mignon, you might feel kind of silly being the only one at the table who orders just a salad because you already know that filet mignon will cause the discomfort of acid reflux later on.

If you have more than occasional acid reflux symptoms, it could be a sign of something worse. If it is left untreated, acid reflux can cause inflammation as well as deterioration of the esophagus, throat lesions, gastro intestinal issue, problems with breathing, and has even been known to be a major factor in sleep apnea. Acid reflux may not be the sole cause either, but could be a sign of something more serious.

The simplest signs of acid reflux are indigestion, and the more acute symptoms of acid reflux can be as severe as problems with breathing and feeling like you are having a heart attack. Most cases of real acid reflux disease can be controlled with medication, although the more severe cases may also involve surgery.
Typically what you will be looking for is something that makes you feel better. For acid reflux, since one of the symptoms is excess acid, since acid reflux is a close cousin to heartburn, you will want something to reduce your acid content. The most commonly prescribed acid reducer is ranitidine. If your case of acid reflux is not overly complex, sometimes ranitidine can be the solution for you.

More and more these days, people are looking to natural or herbal remedies to see what can be obtained to cure whatever they have, and acid reflux is no stranger here. There are many natural remedies that have shown to be effective with acid reflux. The beauty of a natural remedy is that it does not require a prescription, and unlike many prescription medications, a natural remedy usually does not also come with nasty side effects. One of the more popular natural remedies for acid reflux is a tea made with anise, peppermint, and lavender.

Another natural remedy for acid reflux disease is so simple you will wonder why you did not think of it first. This solution simply involves the way you lay in bed. Raise the head of the bed about 6 inches higher than the rest of your body. This process makes it more difficult for the acid to backup in your stomach and could present all the relief you need.

The bottom line is not to take acid reflux disease too lightly. It can be a serious health problem and you need to take the appropriate steps to determine what is causing it and what remedies and medications work best for you in controlling it.

Effective Treatments for Acid Reflux

Gastro-esophageal reflux disease, also referred to as acid reflux, is a physiological condition that causes the regurgitation of the stomach content into the esophagus and throat. Acid reflux is very common and may occur due to inappropriate diet, stress and unhealthy lifestyle. Some people are frequently confronted with acid reflux and in time they can develop serious complications.

Physiological abnormalities seem to be the main cause for acid reflux (weakness of the lower esophageal sphincter, uncontrolled contractions of the sphincter, low pressure at the bottom of the esophagus due to abnormal positioning of the sphincter, etc). People who suffer from acid reflux as a consequence of physiological abnormalities can only overcome their condition through the means of ongoing medical treatment for acid reflux or surgery.

Surgery is a good way of overcoming the condition, but it is not appropriate for all patients. Surgery is recommended only in the chronic forms of acid reflux and for most patients, oral medical treatments for acid reflux provide satisfactory results. Combined with an appropriate diet, most treatments for acid reflux can ameliorate the condition within days.

The most common treatments for acid reflux consist of antacids, histamine antagonists, proton pump inhibitors, pro-motility drugs and foam barriers.

Antacids quickly neutralize the excess of gastric acid inside the stomach. Prescribed in most treatments for acid reflux, antacids are usually very efficient in controlling the levels of digestive fluids. Although antacids provide quick results, their effects are only temporary. The treatments for acid reflux that consist only of antacids can't control the secretion of stomach acid for more than a few hours. In order to maximize their effect and extend the duration of their action, antacids should be taken after every meal. Antacids are safe, easy to use and can be found in any drugstore. In the treatment for acid reflux, it is best to associate antacids with other medications that provide long-term effects (histamine antagonists).

Histamine antagonists have a longer effect than antacid medications and they are very reliable in the treatment for acid reflux. Among the histamine antagonists available in pharmacies, the most popular are: cimetidine (Tagamet), ranitidine (Zantac), nizatidine (Axid), and famotidine, (Pepcid).

Proton pump inhibitors should be taken a few hours before meals. Proton pump inhibitors commonly prescribed in the treatment for acid reflux are omeprazole (Prilosec), lansoprazole (Prevacid) and esomeprazole (Nexium).

Pro-motility drugs and foam barriers are not very popular in the treatment for acid reflux. Pro-motility drugs are experimental drugs and can be released only with medical prescription. They normalize the activity of the esophageal sphincter and increase the pressure at the lower end of the esophagus.

Foam barriers are tablets that transform into foam when they reach the stomach. The foam acts like a barrier against the digestive fluids, protecting the esophagus from being flooded with gastric acid. The tablets also contain substances that control the levels of gastric acid produced by the stomach.

Is Chewing Gum Effective for Heartburn Relief?

This article will talk about chewing gum as a remedy for heartburn problems which most of us might not be aware of. Understanding how a simple gum can reduce heartburn problems will shed light to some of your queries.

Introduction
Heartburn is a digestive condition that can give discomfort and uneasiness to one. One common cause of heartburn is eating highly seasoned, fried and fatty foods. The stomach secretes acids to help food be properly digested and eating fatty foods tends the stomach to increase its acid production in order to digest fat. Fats are way harder to digest than other foods and sometimes if there is too much acid produced by the stomach it refluxes back to the esophagus thus the heartburn. Heartburn is usually described as that painful burning feeling that extends from the stomach, chest to the throat. As such chewing gum has been found to help relieve heartburn.
Chewing Gum-Heartburn Remedy
A study conducted by students of London’s Britain Kings College tested 21 volunteers. Each were given meals that are high in fats for 2 days. After their meals, volunteers were handed out chewing gum on their first day and then esophageal acids were measured. On the second day, no gums were given just their fatty meals, the esophageal acids were also measured. In the conclusion of their study, it was found out that acid levels measured on day one was far less than day two, thus suggesting that chewing gum administered after eating meals can really help reduce stomach acids resulting to heartburn prevention and relief.
Chewing gum makes one secrete more saliva and saliva incidentally has alkalizing effects that helps in nullifying acids produced by the stomach. Anything that makes one secrete more saliva is as effective as chewing gum. However, it also depends on the gum, a sugar free gum is a lot effective and does not cause any tooth decay or cause heartburn problems.
Chewing gum remedy is not effective to all as one might expect. People have different salivary glands and some may produce more compared to others and small amount of saliva produced cannot be effective enough to neutralize stomach acids. When chewing gum, one can feel that more air is swallowed every time and to do this every meal could make one feel bloated and stuffed of air.
Related Remedies
There are also other remedies for heartburn. Cold milk for instance is a good remedy for instant relief from heartburn especially skimmed milk types only since the calcium in it is effective for reducing acid production because it is alkaline based but one should understand that other types of milk only acts as a buffer to the stomach acids hence it does not lessen their level of acidity. Changing one’s lifestyle may also be a good idea to avoid heartburn like eating healthy fruits and vegetables and avoiding vices such as smoking and drinking alcohol. If any of the aforementioned remedies does not work then its best to see a doctor for a thorough examination and recommended medications.

Are There Any Effective Heartburn Remedies?

Juicy Fruit is a surprisingly effective heartburn remedy. Lightly-flavored non-mint gums work best to relieve heartburn symptoms.

If you have to deal with heartburn regularly, no doubt you have wondered if it was possible to get relief from heartburn via home remedies. There are hundreds of heartburn remedies all reported to provide relief anecdotally, but how does the evidence stack up?

We found one site in particular, Heartburn Remedies, which hands-down offers the best exploration of the validity and possible mechanisms behind some popular heartburn remedies. The two remedies that they recommend are chewing gum and vinegar.

The evidence behind the use of chewing gum seems to be extremely convincing. There are a few proposed mechanisms through which it can contribute. Firstly, chewing gum produces saliva, which is then swallowed, which can then aid digestion in the stomach by helping to break down food. Indeed, researchers have found that those who chew their food appropriately are significantly less likely to experience heartburn than those who do not chew their food much as all.

However, saliva not only aids digestion but has other significant contributors to remedying heartburn. After a time of chewing gum, the saliva released appears to increase in pH, moving from a neutral liquid to a base. This base then coats the esophagus as it is swallowed, giving the esophagus a basic pH. This is an amazing protective mechanism.

If you are not familiar with the pH scale, allow us to explain. Neutral solutions have a pH of 7, and are in the middle of the pH chart. Acidic solutions have a pH less than 7, on a scale of 0-7. The lower the number, the more acidic the solution. Stomach acid has a pH in between 2 and 3, which is quite acidic. Acids are produced when a solution has a lot H+ (hydrogen ions), whereas bases are produced when a solution has a lot of OH- (hydroxide ions).

When acids and bases meet, they cancel each other out in a process called neutralization. H+ combines with OH- to form H20, also known as water. Since H+ and OH- have opposite charges, they cancel out as well, leaving us with a harmless solution of water.

Back to the example – when the OH- in our basic saliva comes in contact with the H+ ions in our stomach acid in the esophagus, they neutralize one another. This of course depends on relative content; you will need a lot of saliva to neutralize just a small amount of stomach acid. Fortunately, chewing gum produces large amounts of saliva and acid reflux is often caused by a very small amount of acid (often diluted by being mixed with the stomach’s contents). As a result, there is a lot of strong evidence that chewing gum is an effective heartburn remedy.

The only side-note is that peppermint and spearmint gums should not be used. Mint can stimulate the production of HCl (stomach acid) in a lot of individuals and should be avoided if you experience heartburn regularly.

The other heartburn remedy promoted by the site in question is vinegar. The idea is that taking a small amount of vinegar compels the salivary glands to produce massive amounts of saliva, even more than you might experience from chewing gum. The protective effects work in quite the same way and there is merit to this approach as well.

All in all, there are some effective home heartburn remedies, and you do not have to open up your wallet to get access to them – both of these items are already in most homes or can be obtained for 1$ or less.

Effective Forms of Treatment for Acid Reflux Disease

Gastro-esophageal reflux disease, also known as acid reflux, is a physiological disorder that causes regurgitation of the stomachs' content inside the esophagus and oral cavity. The disease generally occurs as a consequence of increased abdominal pressure, compromised activity of the lower esophageal sphincter (muscular valve that connects the esophagus to the stomach) or inappropriate diet and bad eating habits. Acid reflux has a pronounced recurrent character and it generates symptoms such as heartburn, throat inflammation and soreness, difficulty swallowing and difficulty breathing.

Common in people of all ages, acid reflux is a topical problem in present. Although acid reflux is not considered to be a serious affection, people confronted with recurrent symptoms can in time develop various complications. Sometimes, untreated acid reflux disease can even facilitate the occurrence of esophageal cancer.
The treatment of acid reflux disease generally involves medications that are aimed at controlling the stomach's production of gastric acid. The most common medications used in the treatment of acid reflux disease are antacids. Generally prescribed for ulcer sufferers, antacids can temporarily relieve the symptoms generated by acid reflux disease as well. Antacids reduce the acidity of the stomach, thus ameliorating heartburn and other symptoms generated by acid reflux. Although they have limited action, antacids are safe and they can be purchased from any drugstore without medical prescription.

Stronger medications such as Pepcid, Tagamet, Zantac and Axid can provide better results for people with acid reflux. These medications act by temporarily blocking the stomach cells that produce gastric acid and pepsin. Combined with antacids, drugs such as Pepcid, Tagamet, Zantac and Axid are usually effective in the treatment of acid reflux disease. However, due to the recurrent character of acid reflux, patients often need long-term treatments. If over-the-counter medications can't provide relief for your symptoms, you should see a doctor in order to receive more suitable medications.

Although acid reflux can be controlled with the means of medication treatments, in special cases the disease may also involve surgery. The surgical treatment of acid reflux is usually recommended for patients who need large doses of medications to relieve their symptoms. Statistics indicate that more than 80 percent of acid reflux disease sufferers experience a recurrence of their symptoms soon after completing the treatment prescribed by the doctor. Thus, acid reflux surgery is probably the best alternative to medication treatments, as it can permanently correct any physiological abnormalities linked with this type of disease.

The surgical treatment of acid reflux disease involves increasing the pressure at the level of the esophagus, tightening the walls of the lower esophageal tract or reshaping the esophageal sphincter. The medical procedures used in the surgical treatment of acid reflux disease are quick and reliable, and they involve few risks. Surgery is considered to be the best means of overcoming acid reflux disease in present.
